In the 21st century digital skills are important for teaching in all educational modalities, higher education is in the midst of a significant digital transformation accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the urgent need for educators to develop and enhance their digital skills to adapt to online and hybrid teaching environments. These skills enable teachers to enrich classes with resources, technology tools, implement active methodologies for project-based, collaborative learning that integrate technology. The research used a qualitative approach, which collected data from various academic and scientific sources, including scientific articles, books, theses and relevant reports, selecting peer-reviewed studies in English and Spanish available in recognized databases. The analysis considered that developing digital skills for university teaching is fundamental to foster the teaching-learning environment; the accelerated technological advancement offers the opportunity to propose and use tools and resources to implement them in virtual classrooms. The authors emphasized that when it comes to university teaching, the implementation of practical and project-based learning should be considered, so that future professionals can apply what they have studied. Finally, it was argued that all individuals who are part of an educational environment must adapt to the changes in online education and work together through communication and collaboration among all agents in order to have a quality academic performance.
